A wonderful painting! The girl’s face belies an inner beauty and simplicity of demeanor. She is hard working and dedicated to her task.

There’s a bench in front of this painting. I’ve sat and gazed upon her for hours at a time. She seems so real..it’s almost as if she could get up and walk right out of the painting. Her flushed cheeks and the darkening around her eyes hint of her complex emotions about her predicament. I can see anger and frustration and maybe even a little sadness at having broken her pitcher…her clasped hands hint at tension and anxiety about what she’s going to do and worry about possible consequences. Of all the wonderful paintings hanging in the Legion of Honor, this is the one that never fails to captivate people. Bouguereau has captured her spirit and frozen her in time for eternity.
